On the track Monday and Tuesday and today coffee shop and recuperation. My training schedule is a constant work in progress as Jack and I continue to learn what my body can and can't take.
Tuesdays workout went very well and consisted of an 800 "warmup/run workout", high jump rhythm, javelin practice and then a sprint running workout. My event work continues to pick up when I'm rested as my body learns that it isn't in a constant state of exhaustion. It gives me incredible confidence when I'm able to train at such a high level, even to the point of getting personal bests in practice.
Below is two videos of javelin throws at practice yesterday. Both throws are subtly different to watch but felt enormously different as I threw them. One of them was also about 10 feet further than the other one. Can you tell the difference?
You're right if you are thinking that the second throw was farther. Watch here again in slow motion.
The difference is in how much longer I stayed on the block "my left leg" during the throw. Another difference is that I ran better off my right foot instead of stopping before the throw. I know it might seem hard to tell but I post these to show how much a tiny movement can pay dividends at the end of the throw. It also shows how much work and training goes into making your body do these specific movements, and the fact that you have to teach your body to do the other things naturally that you aren't thinking about doing. Sounds confusing right? It is. And that's what makes the decathlon so beautiful and also extremely difficult and mentally exhausting. And the javelin is only one of ten events!! But as a decathlete you learn to love the trials and hardships just as much as you love high points. It's much like life with ups and downs and yet you must continue to stay focused on your goals and continue pressing forward, building yourself into a better person.
So a little rest today and then back at it Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Leave me a comment if you have questions or want to see more. I love getting comments from you all and will continue to post more events and all the goings on in the life of a decathlete!
