One decathlon down, and another already schedule. It was great to get some confidence back while competing at the Mt Sac decathlon. It had been close to two years since I had last completed one and I had a lotta nerves going into it. Here is how it went:
The first day started off well with a decent time in the 100m at 11.21. Previously up in Berkeley I ran an 11.48 so I am doing the right things and getting faster. Long jump went well, no big PR but a decent series of jumps with one at 7.19 meters, my final jump was much further but I scratched it by a couple inches. Shot put chugged along at 13.64, and I was having some trouble pushing the ball so all in all not to bad. High jump was the downer of the competition. I came in low at 1.88 about 6'2 and skied it so I past the next height and then jumped at 1.94 but could not negotiate a clearance which really put a damper on my score. Usually one of my strongest events I only managed around 600 points when I can usually get 900. We finished the day with the 400m and just got under fifty seconds at 49.96. Still looking to get my running in better shape since I missed so many training days early on the season because of sickness.
The second day started with a lack luster hurdle time at 14.88, but it was my first time through 10 hurdles in two years so I wasn't too disappointed. Moving on to discus I had three solid throws at 44 meters and above and felt comfortable in the ring. The hamstring started to tighten a little in pole vault as I went 4.80, not bad for the first time out. Javelin was another downer of the meet as in practice I have been throwing huge throws well over sixty meters and I only marked a 56.67 throw, I was pretty disappointed with that one. As I got down to the end of the meet I realized how exhausted I was and had a hard time finishing the 1500m in 4:48, my worst performances ever in that event. It became clear at the end of the meet that 1.) I was tired, and 2.) I need more competitions, and 3.) I really need to press the running in practice.
I am super excited to compete again as I have so much potential to score much higher with some more training under my belt. I was disappointed with the over all score of my first decathlon but I was also extremely encouraged because I know the potential that my body holds.
The next decathlon with be at Claremont in LA on May 12th and 13th. It's a really small competition and an amazing facility to run at. Until then its back to the weight room and more running myself to death on the track. More photos and updates to come soon as practice picks up!! Thanks so much for all the support!
Randoc! Glad to see you're blogging so now I can keep up on your accomplishments! I'm cheering for you! I know you can do whatever you put your effort to!
